Following on from the first instalment , which dealt with MES's guest appearances and collaborations up to 1999, we move into the 21st century... Mild Man Jan - Fistful Of Credits (2000) This atmospheric piece of downbeat electronica was recorded with Mild Man Jan aka Spencer Marsden, who co-wrote 'Mad.Men-Eng.Dog'. Like several other MES collaborations, it appeared on the 2001 compilation A World Bewitched  (apparently without Marsden being asked). Mouse On Mars - Cut The Gain / Sound City (2004) Before Von Südenfed (see below) Smith first worked with German electronica duo Mouse On Mars  (Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma) in 2004. These two tracks appeared on their EP Wipe That Sound .  Ghostigital - Not Clean (2005) Einar Örn is best known as a member of The Sugarcubes. He also organised The Fall's trip to Iceland in September 1981, where they recorded 'Look, Know', 'Hip Priest' and 'Iceland'. Ghostigital was his solo project, and this wonderfu

D is for... Daft Punk ‘ Cowboy George ’ features the unlikely scenario of The Fall sampling Daft Punk: the distorted robotic voice that appears nine seconds in is taken from the French electro duo’s 2001 single, ‘ Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger ’. Daily Mirror The death of John Peel in 2004 raised the The Fall's public profile considerably, as many mainstream media obituaries referred to Peel’s love of the group. But the group’s ferocious blend of lo-fi intrigue and brain-busting underground rock is as strong as ever. Peel is no doubt smiling down.’ Ruth Daniel One of the 'in-The-Fall-for-a-day' club. Recruited by Ed Blaney, Daniel played keyboards for part of the 2002 Blackburn gig captured on the

Mark E Smith had a generally disapproving attitude towards Fall musicians working with other artists. In a 1994  Melody Maker interview , he stated that 'I'm very down on working with other people... I think it's fucking phoney. I put all my bands on contracts, so they can't do it'. This was, for example, one of the causes of Marcia Schofield's dismissal in 1990. However, it was not a rule that he applied to himself. From the mid-90s onwards in particular, he worked with a range of artists to produce a series of intriguing and generally very rewarding side-notes to The Fall's back catalogue. This post focuses on guest appearances and collaborations that were not released under The Fall's own name. As a result, it doesn't include things like ' Calendar ', recorded with Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy.
